It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Daniel Powell, affectionately known as JD, who left us on November 3, 2025, at the Delta Regional Medical Center in Greenville, MS. JD was just 30 years old, yet in his time with us, he left an enduring impression that will be cherished by all who knew him.
Born on May 11, 1995, in Cleveland, MS, to Crystal Powell Thornton. JD went to Cleveland Schools his whole life. His passion for life and dedication to his family were evident in everything he did. JD's work at Boyle Lumber Company was followed by his time at Poynor Auto, where he found joy in doing what he loved most—working on cars. His hands were never idle; whether it was fishing, preparing for family crawfish boils, or tackling outdoor projects, he reveled in the simple pleasures of life. Known as a jack of all trades, JD brought warmth and creativity to every endeavor.
On May 12, 2014, JD married the love of his life, Bryce Ruth, in a heartfelt ceremony in Cleveland. Together, they built a loving home filled with laughter and joy, raising their wonderful children, John Marshall and Kathleen Nikole, who were the pride and joy of his life. JD’s unwavering love for his family was one of his most defining traits. He was a devoted husband and father and son, always putting his loved ones first.
A member of Pace Pentecostal Church, JD also found a welcoming community at The United Pentecostals of Cleveland Church, where he felt deeply connected. His spirit was infectious, and he touched the lives of many around him.
In this time of sorrow, the family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to Adoration and Olivia Garcia for their compassionate care during JD's illness. Your kindness has been a source of comfort.
JD is preceded in death by his grandfather, James Powell; beloved grandparents-in-law, BC, and Kathryn Ruth; and Frankie Beach. He leaves behind a loving family: his cherished wife, Bryce; son, John Marshall (JM); daughter, Kathleen Nikole (Kat); mother, Crystal Thornton; father, Marc Thornton; sister, Baylee Nikole Thornton; grandmother, Diane Jones; in-laws, Miller and Elizabeth Ruth; and grandmother-in-law, Billie Beth Beach. He will be dearly missed by his uncle and aunt, Michael and Lydia Powell, his aunt Janis Mayo, and his cousins, including Beth (Jordan) Mosley and Chuck and Jennings Powell, along with countless friends who have become family over the years.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Cleveland Funeral Home, followed by a Celebration of Life Funeral Service at 1:00 PM in the chapel, officiated by Brother Chris Gentry and Brother Larry Weaver.
JD’s spirit will be honored by pallbearers Colby Poynor, Deon Hodges, Will Hardman, Matt Hardman, and Landon Tindle, with honorary pallbearers including Lee Jefferson, Les Poynor, Floyd Arbuckle, Joe Green, and Olivia Garcia.
Cleveland Funeral Home is honored to serve JD's family during this difficult time. As we gather to remember and celebrate JD's beautiful life, let us carry his memory in our hearts, reflecting on the love and joy he shared with all of us.
