Jesse Hood

January 4, 1923 — October 6, 2013

Cleveland, MS- Jesse William Hood age 90 of Cleveland, passed away Sunday October 6, 2013 at the Cedar Manor in Chesapeake . Graveside funeral rites will be 10:00 AM Friday October 11, 2013 at New Cleveland Cemetery . The family will receive friends 11:00 AM Friday 10/11/2013 at Calvary Baptist Church . A service of remembrance will follow visitation at 12:00 PM. Reverend Larry Braswell will officiate the service.
Jesse was born on January 4, 1923 in Cleveland , MS to William Thomas Hood and Classie Bowen Hood. He married Marie Poe Hood on February 11, 1942 in Leland , MS . They were married sixty-seven years and lived all their married life in Cleveland until they relocated to The Orchard in Ridgeland , MS in 2005. After Marie passed away on November 2, 2009, Jesse moved to Chesapeake , VA to live near his son Joe and his wife Kay. He resided in Cedar Manor in Chesapeake until he passed away. There he made good friends and joined Bethel Baptist Church of Chesapeake and was a member of the Senior Saints Sunday School Class.
Jesse was attached to an artillery unit on Attu, Aleutian Islands and Fishers Island , NY during his Army service in World War II. After his discharge from the Army he farmed for several years with his daddy and his father-in-law. In 1950, he began working for Baxter Laboratories, where he was employed until his retirement in 1985. He enjoyed his retirement years.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he was a deacon and a Sunday class member. He enjoyed being involved the Senior Choir and other activities in his church. He loved being outside. He had a vegetable garden, beautiful Iris, pecan trees, fruit trees and other flowers and plants. In his earlier years he liked to deer hunt. He maintained the repairs on his home and vehicles. He was very smart and could repair almost anything. He enjoyed sketching and painting. He took art lessons from Sammy Britt at Delta State University . He is preceded in death by his mother and father, his wife Marie Poe Hood, siblings, Mack Hood and Hazel Hood Gutherie. Survivors include children, Barbara Sue Hood Rains (Marlin) of Madison , MS , Joe Allen Hood (Kay) of Chesapeake , VA, and Spencer Thomas Hood (Fawn), Houston , TX . ; six grandchildren and three step-grandchildren; three great grandchildren and nine step-great grandchildren; and brother, Bennie Leroy Hood, Cleveland , MS.
