Joyce Fortner Barnes age 81 of Merigold, MS passed away Friday, December 23, 2022, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, MS.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM Thursday, December 29, 2022, at Cleveland Funeral Home. The celebration of Life Funeral Service will follow at 2:00 PM in the Cleveland Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the New Cleveland Cemetery. Brother Randy Duke will officiate the services.
Joyce was born August 14, 1941, to Harold James Fortner and Mayrene Simpson Fortner in Osceola Arkansas. She graduated from Marked Tree High School in Marked Tree Arkansas. After high school, she married Douglas Barnes on August 27, 1960. They moved to Memphis, TN for a while and she worked as a secretary for Chip Barwick Auto Sales. In 1972 the family moved to Cleveland, started their own refrigeration company (Barnes Refrigeration), and later opened Barnes Farm Garden Center, she was also a teacher at Victory Heights Christian Academy. Joyce loved her church, serving the Lord and the community. She enjoyed sewing, fishing, hunting, making the family party mix at Christmas time, and playing cards. She also enjoyed helping in the community by being a 4H Volunteer, former Girl Scout leader and Neighborhood cookie chair, a charter member of the Cleveland Optimist Club, and a faithful member of Victory Heights Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents Harold James Fortner and Mayrene Simpson Fortner Coin, husband, Douglas L. Barnes, daughter, Kathryn Renee Barnes Ingram, sister, Linda Weaver Fowler, and a great-grandaughter Ansley Pate Scribner.
Joyce is survived by her children; Cedie B. Kendall (Keith) of Merigold, MS, Steve Barnes (Joanna) of Merigold, MS, Zandra B. Crocker of Merigold, MS, and Hurley McMillian (Susan) of Southaven, MS, brother, William "Buddy" Weaver of Poplar Bluff, MO, 2 brothers in law, Jimmy Fowler of Truman AR, and Jerry Barnes (Mery) of Cullman AL. 13 grandchildren; Brian Kendall (Jamie), Jonathan Kendall (Jennifer), Jennifer Watts (Jeremy), Douglas Harmon, Michael Turner (Laney), Brittney Barnes, Jenna Weeks, Jordan Weeks, Colby Rokasky (Tess), Reece Crocker, Danny McMillian, David McMillian (April), and Jessica Myers (Josh). She also leaves a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a special sister friend Nancy Boyd to cherish her memory.
Pallbearers are her grandsons; Brian Kendall, Jonathan Kendall, Michael Turner, Douglas Harmon, Colby Rokasky, Reece Crocker, Danny McMillian, David McMillian, and Jeremy Watts.
