Mildred Gatlin Smith age 91 of Cleveland, Ms passed away peacefully Sunday, March 10, 2024, at her home in Cleveland.
Mildred was born March 31, 1932, to David Milburn Gatlin and Lela Weeks Gatlin in Sumner, MS. She graduated from West Tallahatchie High School. Mildred married Elgyn Smith in 1955 they moved to Boyle, MS for a short time before moving to Cleveland, MS. Mildred went to work for Color Tile in 1961 and retired when they closed in 1997. She then went to work at Delta State University in the laundry department. Mildred was a kind-hearted giving person always thinking of others. She was the volunteer of the year in 2015-2016 at the Bolivar Medical Center. Mildred was the caregiver for the family, always sitting with and taking care of those in need. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, reading, and being available to tend to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was of the Baptist faith and attended Morrison Chapel Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, David and Lela Gatlin, husband Elgyn Smith, and sons Charles M Smith and William D. Smith, and a sister Dale Card. Mildred is survived by her daughters, Sara Kemp (David) of Strong, AR, Sheila Millican (Mitch) of Cleveland, MS, and daughter-in-law Vickie Smith Barr (Lanny). Grandchildren; Michael Edlund (Kelly), Chris Edlund (Wendy), Monica Pence, Madison Harris, (Manuel), Holly Claire Millican, Lydia Powell (Michael), great grandchildren; Jake Edlund, Dent Edlund, Riley Edlund, C J Edlund, Danika Edlund, Raegan Beach, Marlee Pence, Layne Harris, Sydney Grace Harris, Sadie Gatlin Harris, Jennings Powell, Chuck Powell and great great grandchild Ezrah Slaughter.
A visitation will be held from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at Cleveland Funeral Home in Cleveland, MS, A Celebration of Life Funeral Service will follow at 2:00 PM in the Cleveland Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend John Thomas will officiate the service.
Pallbearers are Michael Edlund, Jake Edlund, Chris Edlund, Michael Powell, Blake Boyer and Tully Boyer. Honorary pallbearers are C J Edlund, Mitch Millican, Manuel Harris and David Kemp.
